I’ve been doing photography seriously since the 1970’s. The advent of digital photography about 15 years ago reinvigorated my interest: I could now do a print at my desk in a couple of minutes instead of an hour or more (per try!) in the darkroom, and good photo printers are far less expensive than a darkroom and its contents. Furthermore, the camera equipment available now really is better in terms of optical resolution, stabilization, and control. The biggest challenge sometimes is remembering which automatic features I’ve turned off, so I can turn them back on.

Photography is partly a reason to get outside, but more a means to share my experiences and vision with others. I would be happy to talk with anyone interested in taking up photography at any level.

Except for the solar eclipse, all of these were shot in the last year. They were printed directly from the camera images (Raw format), without manipulation.

Welcome Back Event! Saturday, September 7, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Let’s play ball, VOLLEYBALL!!! Join us in welcoming back our young adults, youth, and children to school by enjoying an evening of volleyball, badminton for children 12 and under, a campfire pit, and s’mores!! You don’t need to play to attend. “Fans” are always appreciated! Please bring an appetizer, a lawn chair or blanket, and a water bottle, keeping in mind that we will be outside the building on the lawn on Heyward Street. If you play guitar, bring it along to help accompany those who will sing campfire songs! Questions? Contact Nancie Shillington-Pérez at membership@uucolumbia.org.

Lunch at Arabesque

UUCC Ladies LUUnch BUUnch

UUCC Ladies LUUnch BUUnch Fall Startup
It’s time to get together again for our Ladies LUUnch BUUnch starting Thursday, September 12, noon, at Arabesque, 2930 Divine Street. This lunch gathering is open to all women of all ages. We have enjoyed many such occasions at different venues in the past. Arabesque offers a variety in their menu to include vegan and vegetarian options. We will have a private room but do need to know how many will be attending in advance. Please sign up at the Membership Table or email Linda McLeod at bonneylass44@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you all there and hope to see new faces as we get together after the summer break.

UUCC Men’s Breakfast Group

The UUCC’s Men’s Breakfast Group meets at 9:00 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month (next one is September 12). This month we meet at the Lizard’s Thicket on Beltline. If you are interested, please let Phil Turner (pturner@unt.edu)know so we can have space available.

Dances of Universal Peace

All UU’s and friends are welcomed to participate in the Dances of Universal Peace (DUP) on Friday, September 6, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm in the Social Hall. DUP are active practices that can awaken our spirits through words, melodies and motions inspired by different faith traditions. This month’s themes include repentance, forgiveness, thanks, balance, wisdom, and peace.  For more information, contact Marguerite Frongillo, 803-743-0731 or mff426@gmail.com and see the DUP North America website. Upcoming DUP are at UUCC on most first Fridays (no dance in January or July).

Septembr Set

On the fourth Friday of every month the UUCC has a potluck for seniors (self-defined: no ID required:-) that we call September Set. This is a great opportunity to simply talk and eat with old friends—and make new ones! Sometimes we will have a program after the meal, but usually we just catch up with what’s happening in each other’s lives.

No need to sign up; all you have to do is bring a dish to share with others. Hope to see you at our next September Set dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27! If you have questions, email or call Pat Mohr (patmohr@mindspring.com; 803-463-3504) or Jean Capalbo (jacapalbo@aol.com; 803-799-1001). This is a great way for newcomers to meet people and for all of us to renew friendships. Please join us!

Congregational Conversation, Sunday, September 29

After socializing for a bit, we invite you to join the Board of Trustees in the Sanctuary at 12:30pm for an informal Congregational Conversation. One item to be discussed is plans for new window coverings in the Sanctuary. Don’t miss this “shady” conversation!

Transylvanian Travels with Zsolt, Sunday, September 29, 7:00 p.m.

Join us in the Social Hall to hear about and see photos of the recent July pilgrimage and vicariously get to know the Beszterce partner church members who shared the adventure for 3 days. Enjoy getting a feel for your Unitarian roots dating from 1568 and see unique parts of Transylvania new to both UUCC pilgrims and also new to our Beszterce companions. (And just possibly you may be tempted to join a future pilgrimage.) Light refreshments to follow the presentation.

For more info on what’s happening at UUCC, check our calendar.
